The Court Fool
Inviting the Fool to your Event
The Fool attends "court" in many places—at the lecture, in the classroom, meeting, festival, protest, boardroom, celebration, conference, convention… By inviting the Fool to your court, as an observer or participant, you open your community to new possibilities for joy, understanding, and inspiration. I respectfully "play" with the possibilities at each event in consultation with the people or organizations involved. Employing the red nose of the clown, I am given permission to review and give comment at agreed upon times. I can also act as the mercurial change agent, playing with participants or giving workshops on The Art of the Fool.The work of the Court Fool, Jester or Clown is the art of social transformation through reflection. By mirroring back our experiences, the Fool allows us to see our thoughts, feelings, and actions more objectively, thus affording more opportunities for clarity and insight. The Fool can help to ease an otherwise tense or difficult situation by playing with and compassionately laughing at our human struggles.
Working through pure archetype and idea, Fools know nothing and yet everything at the same time. One moment, they get it all wrong so that we laugh and learn through their mistakes; the next moment, they speak the vision that is yet to be seen. Whichever way it turns—and sometimes it turns both ways at once—Fools help us to free ourselves from fixed concepts so we can access ever deeper truths and discover the very real and often silly reality of intuitive and creative thinking.
